NOT FITTING IN! Being an overweight cyclist...

I think if you are new to getting into cycling, it's always a tough sport to get into. But if you are on the curvier side it's also that bit harder but then if you are also female then it can feel extremely daunting. I was literally new to the sport, 100kg and really struggled to ride 10km. And then it makes you feel like you don't really fit in. But wanted to share my experience if you are fee...

    The more people on bikes, the better. No one should ever feel “less than” and it breaks my heart that people would shy away from cycling because of judgment and exclusion. But I love my race bike, my racey “pro” kit, and burying myself on fast rides. I hope others don’t think I’m exclusive or hateful just because that’s how I find joy on the bike. Looking “pro” doesn’t always equate to being exclusive; having a nice bike doesn’t always mean you think less of others.

    Former pro bike mechanic here, my advice when beginning is don’t worry about fitting in! Do it for the fun of it and to get fit. Skinny doesn’t mean fit either. I dealt with some of that elitist mentality back when I wrenched on bikes, and wouldn’t put up with it. All the group rides I led had a no-drop policy and if someone didn’t want to stay with the group they were invited to go on and leave. As far as kit not being available till recently, I will have to disagree there. Any mainstream companies like Louis Garneau, Castelli, and even some of the bike brands had excellent women specific designs and sizes twenty years ago. Half my clients were female cyclists and we never had issues getting them fitted, but maybe our shop tried a little better than most back then.

    In Belgium we met an old guy on road bike with quite some big belly, but he told us about his trips and longest was above 2000km to Italy an incredible distance for me. In Belgium cycling is quite inclusive: Big groups of old men on road bikes, kids, and families on cargo bike or durch bikes all on the same tracks enjoying to stay in nature. The advantage in cycling is that stamina comes just with practice. Certainly it helps in climbing if you are light weight, but on flat terrain it does not matter that much anyway. And the thin get out of shape if they don't practice as well. The most important thing is to have joy. Joy means you do it more often and doing it more often means you get better and can last longer and more easily. If you feel uncomfy, exhausted and close to vomiting than you should remember that even the pros feel often quite the same on a tough climb. It is normal to some extend if you fight too hard. Just select a more easy trip next time or ride slower and it will feel better. During covid I missed cycling to work and it felt horrible when I restarted, but after two weeks it was fine again. You have just to give your body time to adjust and be indulgent and it will be OK. And if you ride in really bad weather or on a tough climb or you have a puncture or other technical problems you don't care how others look like or if they are male, female, beginner etc.. You are just happy to see another cyclist soul. You are thankful if you get a nice greeting or even handed some tool to fix your gear. Certainly there are also the ones who don't look around and try to beat some virtual record without realising what happens around them, but that is a small number and who really cares about them?

    Biking is for everyone, you just need to find your tribe - or form one. I’m in a group and we mountain bike. We’re all the misshapes you get in post 55 people and we don’t care. Some are ex 100m plus roadies, others started after a health scare. We have a regular group ride evening and regular stops to get everyone back together. There’s no attitude about bikes, e-bikes, carbon/alloy, used or second-mortgage, walking around something you don’t fancy riding, pushing up hill. It’s just a bunch of greybeards having bike associated fun. The big benefit of mountain biking is that the clothing doesn’t need to be too specific and the sizes are a lot more realistic. I know from my road riding days that Italian clothing was always hilariously sized and in general, if you have any muscles in your arms then you are in difficulty. Nowadays, for road riding, I wear bib-shorts or tights, mountaineering thermals, mountain biking shirts & outer jackets. Yes, my clothes may flap but I’m comfy, warm and out all day regardless of the weather - oh and not riding where the last 2% performance matters. Honestly, some roadies need a reality check, they epitomise “all the gear and no idea” whilst only boosting someone’s profit.

    Your right, womens cycle clothing is pretty much all small sizes and tight fit. Find it hard to find kit that fits and is not tight and uncomfortable. My body shape will never change however much I cycle, so I want comfy kit. There are lots of road clubs around me and I see them out and about when cycling. They never say hello, help and quite often look down on you. Or treat you as though you do not exist. They zoom by and expect you to get out of their way so they do not impact their PB and strata timings.

  • @BellaVista1470
    @BellaVista1470 21 час назад

    Thanks for this Katie. Some of the cycle clothing companies are missing out on a lot of money by not catering to bigger people. Also the assumption that a person is unfit because their BMI is not 20 is sometimes rubbish. I enjoy casual cycling with friends and mostly ride an ebike now. The snobbery is kind of weird. Sometimes I get road bikers stopping next to me and commenting that I'm "cheating". And I think- well I live in a really hilly and windy city, and I'm getting older and I'm just happy to be out there enjoying the fresh air!! I don't care how many km I do. Sometimes its fun to stop for a coffee and chat for an hour. So what!! Each to their own..............

    Forty-odd year ago, just outside Penrith, I met an old fella on an old, black, three-speed who was on a trip south. He was heading for Shap dressed in a WW2 dispatch rider’s trench-coat, flat cap, hobnail boots, and cycling clips round his ankles (remember those?). He was taking it, “One day at a time, lad”, maybe twenty miles a day at best, but he was getting there. It’s really not the kit that matters. Talk to a recumbent rider to find out! WE are an odd lot, us wheelers.😊 loved your vlog, useful advice.

    A LBS near me has an annual used bike sale. You take your bike to the shop, the staff inspects the bike and tells you the price you can expect. The shop has a one day sale of fairly priced bikes that actually are in good repair. As a seller you can get either - a check or a shop credit. If your bike doesn't sell - you pick it up the next day or it is donated to a local organization that gets bikes to those who can't afford one. That is your call. I've done it twice with bikes I no longer used and both were sold. I got some new bike parts, tires and kit - bikes are being used by someone who was told what they were getting. This shop has been around for a long time and has a very good reputation. Win - Win as near as I can tell.

MOVE FORWARD NEARLY 40 YEARS, AND IT IS EVEN WORSE WITH NO ONE WANTING TO HELP! I HAVE TRIED TO SPEAK TO NUMEROUS CYCLISTS WHILE OUT, BUT GET BLANKED OUT! I AM NOT WORRIED AS I HAVE THE LAST LAUGH, AS I HAVE 4 TOP-END CUSTOM ROAD BIKES, AND THOUSANDS OF POUNDS OF RARE, HARD TO GET CYCLING BRANDS THAT YOU CANNOT GET IN THE UK! UNLIKE MOST PEOPLE WHO THINK CASTELLI IS THE BEST, BUT ONLY WEAR THEIR MOST BORING COLOUR KIT, AND ARE NOT ITALIAN-MADE, I BUY FROM ABROAD WHERE YOU CAN ACTUALLY GET THEIR STAND OUT COLOURS, AND IS AVAILABLE UP TO A 5XL! AS I ENJOY THE GOOD LIFE, I AM NOT WORRIED ABOUT RACING, BUT ENJOYING THE BEST BIKES, AND KIT MONEY CAN BUY! I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE JEALOUSY I GET WHILE I GO CYCLING, EITHER! I DON'T DO BORING, AND HATE PEOPLE HAVING NO PERSONALITY, AND WORRYING ABOUT WHAT OTHER "SADDOES" THINK! I DON'T DO SHIMA(NO!), OR FLURO GREEN/BLACK KIT, BUT DO CAMPAGNOLO SUPER RECORD EPS/WTO "BLING" CARBON WHEELS, AND BRIGHT COLOUR CARBON ITALIAN-MADE SHOES, ETC! I have 7 bikes (used to have a lot more) and I ride the one I've owned the longest the most... It's a 1983 Trek that I bought new... Many parts were replaced as I wore them out! Of the 40-50 bikes I've had over the decades that bike is the most comfortable bike I've ever owned. I've used it for riding single track, rail trails, commuting, multi-month touring, as well as road and urban cycling. I've still got dedicated touring, mountain, and urban bikes but more often that not it's that 1983 Trek that you'll find under me. I got rid of all the road racing (Reynolds 531, Campagnolo, tubulars) stuff years ago. With the mindset that cycling is a lifetime sport, find and keep the bikes that you really like and you'll be happier than always looking for the next one!

If you liked these videos please 'like' and subscribe for future updates, it's a huuuge work in progress but there will hopefully be many more adventures to come, thank you thank you! 😍

    Hi Katie, what a lovely video and the encouragement for others so nice. I have ridden a bike, a long time and even as an older gent, who now rides an ebike, I find some cyclists looking down their noses. Keep making great videos, and nice of you to share with us.

    This is my kind of cycling... adventuring! I've got over 8,600 miles of self-supported touring behind me and plan to do more. Once experienced it is seduces you to do more. It never gets old! I stopped worrying about going fast a long time ago... I see a kindred spirit forming in Katie! Happy adventuring to you Katie!

    Cool plug for a “ middle person “ style online bike marketplace. Very good point about carbon assessment, we could judge steel fairly well back then, but not effectively carbon today.

    It can be harder to sell a bike with carbon parts vs alloy

    That's a really cool "Service' , I don't think we have anything like it in NZ . I clicked on your vid because I thought it was about you selling a motorcycle ! Hilarious that I feel the same-way about my bikes (motorcycles) when I'm somewhere else and they're all covered-up at home having no 'Adventures' . Every time I sell a bike I'm always sad to see it go too... I appreciate nice push-bikes also , I have a couple of mountain-bikes (one flash-one ) and a nice old vintage racing-bike that needs some love...... Dave nz
